Air compressors increase pressure and decrease the volume of a given gas, typically air. As they do so, they concentrate impurities such as moisture and oil for easier elimination. Storage tanks enable the compression to run faster and still deliver a reliable source of compressed air. Compressors that function without oil eliminate the need to filter and to properly dispose of oil, though they do not run as quietly as oiled compressors.
