Ammonium sulphate is an inorganic salt prepared by treating ammonia with sulphuric acid. Ammonium sulphate decomposes upon heating above 250 °C, forming ammonium bisulphate.
Heating at higher temperatures results in decomposition into ammonia, nitrogen, sulphur dioxide, and water. Ammonium sulphate forms many double salts (ammonium metal sulphates) when its solution is mixed with equimolar solutions of metal sulphates and the solution is slowly evaporated. Such double metal sulphates include ammonium cobaltous sulphate, ferric ammonium sulphate, ammonium nickel sulphate and ammonium cerous sulphate.
Ammonium sulphate is a widely used reagent in molecular biology and chromatography. It is useful in the isolation and purification of enzymes and proteins. It is used for the precipitation or fractionation of proteins or for purification of antibodies. It is also useful for crystallographic analysis of nucleic acids and proteins. Ammonium sulphate is also widely used in HPLC of proteins, such as in hydrophobic interaction chromatography. Ammonium sulphate is used in long PCR buffer, in PCR lysis solution, and in secondstrand cDNA synthesis. Also it is used for the HPLC analysis of phospholipids.
Soluble freely in water; insoluble in alcohol, acetone.
